The South African Air Force was a major Mirage user on the African continent with a large Mirage III fleet of many variants. The Mirage IIIEZ aircraft were built for the fighter/bomber role with improved avionics. Mirage IIIEZ #829 (c/n 459) No 3 Squadron, South African Air Force was based at AFB Waterkloof in 1980. The squadron fought in several engagements during the South-West Africa/Angola Border War. This aircraft was later converted to a Cheetah E No 829.
