As a replacement for the aging Centurion Tanks, Canada acquired 128 Leopard 1 tanks in 1978–79 for its Land Forces, with 114 being Leopard C1s. Most of the new Leopard C1s were originally stationed with 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group at Canadian Forces Base Lahr in West Germany and operated by the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s). The remainder were distributed between Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, crewed by the “Flyover Squadron” (originally B Squadron, 8CH and later C Squadron, RCD), and the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School.
