The Canadian Forces Tank Replacement Project focused on the acquisition of Leopard 2 variants to replace the aging Leopard C2 fleet. Of the 80 Leopard 2A4s purchased from the Netherlands, 42 were converted to the Canadian Leopard 2A4 CAN standard. The Leopard 2A4 CAN is armed with the L44 smooth-bore 120mm cannon, two C6 General Purpose Machine Guns, and sixteen 76mm Grenade Dischargers. Entering service in 2012, the Leopard 2A4 CANs are deployed to the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), C Squadron Royal Canadian Dragoons, the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School, and the Canadian Forces School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
